Our First Right

The tiny hand of an innocent life

The tiny hand of an innocent life

The first right endowed to each of us by our Creator is life, therefore it is the first right we should defend. I am pro-life because the alternative is to be pro-death. I believe abortion is the most tragic failure of our otherwise civil society. What kind of society stands idly by while the most innocent of its members are killed on a daily basis? If we cannot defend innocent life, how can we defend liberty and property? How can so many people support abortion when it targets the unborn, the most innocent people in our society? I think part of the problem is that people just don’t think very deeply about the issue. This anecdote I saw on Facebook recently points this out nicely:

“A worried woman went to her gynecologist and said: ‘Doctor, I have a serious problem and desperately need your help! My baby is not even 1 year old and I’m pregnant again. I don’t want kids so close together. So the doctor said: ‘OK, and what do you want me to do?’ She said: ‘I want you to end my pregnancy, and I’m counting on your help with this.’ The doctor thought for a little, and after some silence he said to the lady: ‘I think I have a better solution for your problem. It’s less dangerous for you too.’ She smiled, thinking that the doctor was going to accept her request. Then he continued: ‘You see, in order for you not to have to take care of 2 babies at the same time, let’s kill the one in your arms. This way, you could rest some before the other one is born. If we’re going to kill one of them, it doesn’t matter which one it is. There would be no risk for your body if you chose the one in your arms.’ The lady was horrified and said: ‘No doctor! How terrible! It’s a crime to kill a child!’ ‘I agree’, the doctor replied. ‘But you seemed to be OK with it, so I thought maybe that was the best solution.’ The doctor smiled, realizing that he had made his point. He convinced the mom that there is no difference in killing a child that’s already been born and one that’s still in the womb. The crime is the same! If you agree, please SHARE. Together we can help save precious lives! Love says I sacrifice myself for the good of the other person. Abortion says I sacrifice the other person for the good of myself.”

Most Americans don’t even realize that the gruesome practice of abortion is a favorite tool of racists who sought to use it as a way to control minority populations. Since the 1973 Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision, the leading cause of death among black Americans is not heart disease, cancer, or aids. No, their leading cause of death is abortion. Approximately 13 million unborn black Americans have been killed in the womb since 1973.

Many Americans believe Roe vs. Wade decided the abortion issue once and for all, and conservatives believe all we have to do is stack the Supreme Court and repeal that decision. It is obvious to me that after 38 years that approach is not working. I believe the answer lies within the 10th amendment to the US Constitution. Court rulings carry no weight when they defy the Constitution, and the states should simply refuse to enforce those rulings. For far too long, the states have allowed the federal government to have its way on issues that were left to the states to decide. The federal government doesn’t even have the authority to outlaw abortion, because it doesn’t have authority over life and death matters. All laws against murder come from the state level of government. It’s time for us to take back our state authority over abortion.

Texas should lead the fight against the federal government on this issue and outlaw abortion in our state. This is why I am committed to introducing legislation which would define life in the womb as a person with his/her own DNA beginning at fertilization, and as such that life is a person protected under law. In that same bill, I would also fight to repeal the provisions of a Texas law passed in 2003 which specifically protects abortion doctors and mothers who kill unborn individuals in the womb while the rest of that same law makes it a homicide if someone else kills an unborn person. The text of that bill can be viewed here:http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/78R/billtext/html/SB00319F.htm. This bill was supposedly a victory for the pro-life cause because it created a new category for homicide in Texas law pertaining to the unborn. However, since it specifically exempts abortion doctors and the mother from prosecution for killing the unborn, it is unacceptable and does not belong in the Texas Code.

It’s time for Texas to stand up and lead in this fight against abortion. We need to send courageous people to Austin so that we can stand up to the federal government on this issue. Some people might feel that picking a fight with the federal government is folly and can lead nowhere. If I’m the only one fighting, that might be correct. But if YOU stand with me, we can get this done. Will you join me in my fight to protect innocent life in Texas?

In Liberty,
